However, there are several jobs in the carpentry field that pay more than average.

It takes specialized training

You will need to have a certificate of completion and a license as a carpenter before you can begin working on Alaska's construction projects. Both licenses must be obtained by the state. They must be obtained through the Division of Corporations or the Department of Commerce. A carpenter's license is required in order to be allowed to work in Alaska. You also need a $10,000 guarantee bond. You also need to have general insurance.

In Alaska, there are two carpenters training organizations: the Carpenters Training Trust and the Alaska Forum. Both these organizations offer specialized training. The former offers nationally-recognized training, while industry-specific training is offered by the latter.

It is a unionized trade

The Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters of Alaska, or PCNW, is the representative body for Alaskan Carpenters. This trade organization represents 28,000 carpenters. The PCNW ended a three-week strike in July 2018 to secure a new contract. A pro-company proposal was narrowly defeated by the union. The union will continue lobbying for better wages, conditions, and benefits.

A carpenter named John Ballantyne, a former high-ranking official in the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters, has filed a lawsuit against the national leadership of the union. He claims the local council was placed under trusteeship in May 2018, in order to cover Laufenberg’s corruption. The national leadership also approved the move. McCarron, Eastern District vice-president Michael Capelli are among those named in the case.
