Red House Painters, a cult-band, has become one of 4AD’s most enduring bands in the years since their debut. During their time on the label, they've recorded a series of records which have helped define the label. 4AD will release a box set containing their four first albums, Down Colorful Hill (Rollercoaster), Red House Painters, Ocean Beach, and Bridge on April 21st.
Drop: a reverb-drenched six-song debut
Red House Painters were formed just one year ago. Their debut album, six song LP entitled "Drop", was released. It contained six songs. It was heavy with reverb. It was very reminiscent of an early C100 Memorex cassette. The songs were a bit choppy, but they had a good feel to them and Mark Kozelek's vocals were clear and uncluttered.

Their reverb-soaked, tremolo-drenched guitars were often reminiscent if Neil Young. There was also a strong tendency to cover classic songs. However Kozelek also had original material, which wasn't always easy to find. He did a rework of John Denver's Take Me Home' and also performed 'I Am A Rock,' by Simon and Garfunkel on 1993's Rollercoaster.
"Moments" is a more pastoral approach
The following album, "Ocean Beach", featured a more folk-influenced approach. Their early albums were not known for their long, droning epics. They now have more melodies as well as lyrical narratives and arrangements. It was the last album to feature Gorden Mack as guitarist. Kozelek began moving toward a more radio-friendly sound with this album. It featured more upbeat songwriting than 'Summer Dress' or 'San Geronimo', while the album's covers by Yes and Fleetwood Mac of Long Distance Runaround' are more relaxed.
'Long Distance Runaround’: Acoustic cover of a hit 1971 song
The Red House Painters had covered a lot of classic rock tracks over the years, but 'Long Distance Runaround' was their first acoustic cover. It's not their best cover, but it's a solid song which sees Kozelek breaking out of his shell and delivering more fully developed songs and melodies.

'Ocean Beach': a more introspective approach
With Ocean Beach, Kozelek and the Red House Painters took a more folk-influenced approach to their music. There are fewer long, dreamlike epics than on their first albums and more songs that are more contemplative than ever.
